Like the ever-changing styles on the runways and red carpets, hairdos also
undergo constant change. I recently asked celebrity hair stylist Tippi
Shorter, an Avon Global Stylist Advisor and creative hair artist, for some
of her go-to hair tips and tricks. Tippi, who is responsible for creating
looks for beautiful hair role models like Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Beyonce,
gave me some fast and easy ways to change up your hair routine without a
personal stylist.
What's your number one tip for styling African-American hair?
undergo constant change. I recently asked celebrity hair stylist Tippi

of her go-to hair tips and tricks. Tippi, who is responsible for creating
looks for beautiful hair role models like Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Beyonce,
gave me some fast and easy ways to change up your hair routine without a
personal stylist.
What's your number one tip for styling African-American hair?
African American women have so many different types of natural curl and
also styles that are super straight. I suggest finding products that
complement and enhance your natural texture, but most importantly keeping
hair moisturized by using an overnight deep conditioner for an extra dose of
moisture, a thick leave-in conditioner or a serum for everyday styling.
What is your favorite beauty tool to work with?
I never leave home without my Mason Pearson hairbrush and I also love my
OnePass flatiron.
Do you have a celebrity look that you are most proud of creating?
I love the hair that I did for Alicia Keys for the AMA's. It was like an
inverted braided mohawk updo...sounds crazy, but worked beautifully for the
red carpet.
Do you notice different hair trends in California versus New York?
Yes, the hair tends to be a little edgier in NY. Hair in LA is very
pretty and healthy-looking, and NY is more about interesting cuts and color.
How do you translate looks from the runway to real life?
No matter how crazy or simple the hairstyles are on the runway, there is
always a realistic, user-friendly base for each look. I look at each style
and see what elements would work for my client or for the general public.
From there, I tweak the style to fit the personality wearing it. If it
doesn't work, don't force it... there are plenty of other great styles out
there!
Are there any hair products that you recommend for teens who want to create a diva look without breaking the bank?
The easiest way to get that diva look is by adding a little bit of shine.
I recommend finishing any style with Avon Advance Techniques Mirror Shine
Spray--it's only $5 and it gives hair that extra boost of glamorous shine. I
also love working with hair accessories--they're a simple way to dress up any
look.
What is your advice for teens who want to reverse damaged hair?
Unfortunately, there is no proven way to "reverse" damaged hair; you can
only treat and mend what you have. I suggest using a repairing treatment
like Avon Advance Techniques Intense Repair Overnight Elixir before you go
to bed. In the morning, when your hair is dry, help keep hair smooth by
applying a light serum like Avon Advance Techniques Dry Ends Serum.
Do you have any recommendations for a quick at-home prom hair-do that emulates your red carpet star styles?
Some of my favorite red carpet styles are big, sexy volume and sleek
ponies/buns. They are perfect prom looks that are easy to re-create at home
in just a few steps.
Big, sexy volume:
1. Begin this look by running Avon Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse
through hair root to tip.
2. Create soft curls by setting hair with Avon Advance Techniques Pillow
Curlers, which I use every night. Spray a light mist of Avon Advance
Techniques Hair Spray to ensure hair will hold curl.
3. Remove the curlers from your hair. Flip hair over front of head and spray
with additional hair spray to create extra volume and hold. Run fingers
through hair to loosen curls for a soft finish.
Sleek ponies/bun:
1. To create the perfect canvas for a defined part, start with clean, smooth
hair.
2. Apply Advance Techniques Dry End Serum to the ends of your hair and Avon
Advance Techniques Super Straight Smoothing Balm from root to tip. Using
Avon Advance Techniques Cushion Brush, blow dry hair straight.
3. Use a comb to create a defined part on the side of the head. Pull all
hair into a tight, sleek bun at the back of the neck to make the part really
stand out. Spray a light mist of Avon Advance Techniques Mirror Shine Spray
to create a high-sheen finish.
